The Supreme Court has instructed podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia to ensure that ‘The Ranveer Show’ is suitable for all age groups. On Monday, the court permitted Allahbadia, a prominent YouTuber, to continue uploading his podcasts and social media content, weeks after it had ordered him to halt his broadcasts.
SC Gives Ranveer Allahbadia’s ‘The Ranveer Show’ A Relief
During the ruling, the bench emphasized to senior advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, who represented Allahbadia, that fundamental rights are not granted unconditionally and come with specific restrictions. Justice Surya Kant warned that although young people may perceive the court as outdated, it has the means to address their actions and advised against underestimating its authority.
“Subject to the petitioner furnishing an undertaking to the effect that his podcast shows will maintain the desired standards of decency and morality so that viewers of any age group can watch, the petitioner is allowed to resume the Ranveer Show,” a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N K Singh said.
This statement was made in light of Allahbadia’s request to resume his show, which he claimed was his sole source of income, following his involvement in a controversy sparked by inappropriate comments made during Samay Raina’s YouTube show, ‘India’s Got Latent.’
Counsel On Ranveer Allahbadia’s Case
The counsel added that Allahbadia has 280 employees and this is his source of livelihood. “I understand he has no sense of humour, but he interviews personalities – sportspersons, politicians, spiritual leaders. That’s how he earns livelihood. He won’t be able to afford legal representation for himself eventually if this condition continues,” he said.
The Supreme Court has now required Allahbadia to submit an undertaking ensuring that his future episodes of ‘The Ranveer Show’ uphold decency. Furthermore, the court denied his request to travel abroad until he participates in the investigation. It also prohibited him from discussing the ‘India’s Got Latent’ case in his show.
What Happened Earlier?
The apex court has extended the interim protection from arrest for Allahbadia until further notice, reiterating the importance of his engagement in the investigation in Guwahati. The bench also noted the perspectives of Attorney General and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who remarked on the potential need for regulations to prevent the airing of programs that don’t align with societal moral standards.
